Newly planted tree

Asked April 8, 2020, 9:45 AM EDT

I noticed a split in the lower trunk of a tree i had planted last spring and i'm worried this may affect the trees health and if i should have this replaced. I attached pictures to be reviewed. I was not sure if Ask an Expert answers tree questions. Thanks for your consideration.

Based upon what we can see in the photo, we think the tree is unlikely to close the wound and fully recover from the damage. Replacement is warranted and it's probably better to do that now than wait to see what happens.
