Service berry branches

Asked April 5, 2020, 5:13 PM EDT

My service berry looks good overall but some branches look like the picture attached at the ends (like a thickening without any flowers). Should I prune these bits off?

What you are seeing is the branch distortion caused by serviceberry rust last year. It is no longer infectious, but prune off affected branch tips back to healthy, vigorous leaf buds.

Here is more about serviceberry rust: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/rust-diseases-trees The photo of the hawthorne rust disfiguring the woody part is what the rust looks like when it is actively infecting (sort of fuzzy.)
