Black lesion on eastern redbud

Asked April 5, 2020, 3:15 PM EDT

I purchased this weeping eastern redbud from a local independent garden center a few weeks ago. I recently noticed two black lesions on the trunk within a foot or two of the ground. The area is somewhat sticky near the wound. Any ideas, and what can I do to help the tree?

We viewed your photos. You may be dealing with possible cankers, insects or both and we cannot say for sure. You want the best possible growth for your new tree.
We recommend that you return the tree for a refund, a healthy replacement, or purchase another type of tree based on your site conditions and mature height and width.
