Roses in shade?

Asked April 4, 2020, 7:05 PM EDT

All of my roses save one get a lot of sun and do well. The last one is in a spot that gets a mix of sun and shade and is a runt. Is there a heartier type I can plant there that would work?

Roses do need sun to grow and bloom well. Some will handle a bit more shade than others, and often are noted as “part sun” if you research them online. The OSU Extension article “Landscaping with roses” mentions some for partial shade. Consider counting the hours of sun this location receives during the summer months. If you find it really is mostly shade, consider other shrubs to replace the stunted rose.
