new garden plant

Asked April 3, 2020, 2:20 PM EDT

Hello! This just showed up in my garden this year, and I'm not sure what it is. I already have an invasive vine problem, so if it is unfriendly, I'd like to get it out now! Can you identify it? Thank you!

That is Japanese honeysuckle, an invasive plant. Be sure to get all the root when you pull it. Japanese honeysuckle has more than one leaf shape, so it can be a little confusing to identify unless you know that. It has the "oak leaf" shape as in your photo, and a simple unlobed shape.

Take a look at our webpage about it: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/japanese-honeysuckle
