Japanese Red Maple bark has fungus on it

I was wondering if anybody has any advice on how to treat this fungus growing on our Japanese Red Maple tree? Will it kill the tree? Please help...

It is probably moss or lichen which to not cause harm to the tree. This is more common in shaded conditions.
