When is a good time to start keeping hens for laying eggs? Can we start the beginning of April? Also, I do not know if there are any rules I must follow to keep hens in the backyard in the town of Quantico. Do I need a permit or do I need to make a notification? Hens have been kept in a coop on the property in the recent past. Where can I purchase 10-15 pullets? Thanks, Jeremy Ayars

I am not aware of any restrictions on owning chickens in Quantico, but I suggest that you reach out to the town and ask them. April is a great time to start a flock of birds and chicks are now available at local farm supply stores. I am not aware of anyone that is selling old pullets that are starting to lay. If you decide to proceed, you will need to register your flock with the Maryland Department of Ag. The form can be found here https://extension.umd.edu/sites/extension.umd.edu/files/_docs/programs/poultry/poultry_registration%...
Additionally, you will need get a permit and follow all the rules and regulations if you with to sell eggs. You can find the permit herehttps://mda.maryland.gov/foodfeedquality/Documents/2020%20Producer-Packer%20Registration%20Form.pdf
Hope this helps
