Home orchard cherry trees

Asked March 21, 2020, 3:17 PM EDT

What should I be doing with my cherry trees this spring. I have six, 3 year old Skeena trees on Gisela6 root stocks. I am not sure how much fertilizer and what mix they need, if they should be mulched and how much water each week. Do I need to begin a spray program? The trees all look healthy , have been pruned at 12' and spreaders put on the appropriate branches. Thanks very much Bob Fuquay

Thank you for your question, Bob. OSU has a couple of Extension publications which should answer it, and fill in other areas. This one is specifically for home orchards: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec819/html

T
his one is on pruning requirements of home orchard trees: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/pnw400/html

As for a spray schedule, you don't say whether your cherries have had any pests in the past, or whether you are observing any potential threats now. But this publication should help you decide on a course of action: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec631

Hope these are helpful. Good luck!

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. The Skeena cxherry is our favorite by far and we are hoping for our first crop this year.
