Thoughts on last frost date?

Asked March 20, 2020, 12:11 PM EDT

What do you estimate our last frost date is this year (2020) in Maryland? It seems like with climate change the weather keeps getting warmer, and the charts I am referencing seem old enough that they could potentially be out of dateā€¦

Good morning. Take a look at our spring frost date page for a link you can use to enter your zip code and find your area's average last frost dates. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/spring-frostfreeze-dates-maryland

It is true that our weather is getting warmer and spring "leaf out" (when deciduous leaves emerge) has occurred three to four weeks earlier than the long-term average in some places this year. (More info on that here, https://www.usanpn.org/news/spring) That said, climate change makes our weather more unpredictable and there is still a possibly for a late freeze.

I recommend that you still follow the charts based on historical data. If you want to experiment and push things out a little earlier, be prepared to cover plants with a frost cloth/row cover for protection. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/floating-row-cover
