What you have growing right now is annual bluegrass, or Poa annua. This is a very prolific cool season weed that we are seeing all over the place right now. The good news is that this weed will start to die out when the temperatures warm up, however, it is also likely to come back next year. At this point in the season, there is not much you can do to eradicate annual bluegrass short from digging it up.

You will want to look at your soil conditions, including compaction, pH, and fertility to encourage a healthy turf to crowd out weeds. I recommend taking a soil test if you have not already done so. We have kits here at the Extension office. Currently, you will need to call and make an appointment to come pick one up if you decide to do that. Call (910) 455-5873. Chemical control at this time is not recommended, especially since you are reseeding your lawn and anything you apply will damage your turf. Your best bet is to encourage a healthy lawn through proper fertilization, mowing, irrigation and prevent annual bluegrass from coming up next year. To do this, you will need to apply a pre-emergent herbicide around Labor Day, and re-apply according to the label of the product.
