Laying hens

Asked March 19, 2020, 5:14 PM EDT

My hens are pulling feathers down to flesh. How much protein do they need in their feed? What is the best feed for laying hens? They are around 2 years old. Six hens six eggs no roster.

If your hens are feather pecking and possibly cannibalism they have a nutritional deficiency. The amount of protein in the feed depends on the energy content.

There isn't necessarily one time of feed that is better than another. A complete layer feed should be given - without diluting it with scratch grains or cracked corn.

If you are feeding a layer feed and the problem continues it maybe behavioral. See the article at https://poultry.extension.org/articles/poultry-behavior/feather-pecking-and-cannibalism-in-small-and...
