Blackberry cuttings

Asked March 18, 2020, 1:46 PM EDT

I just cut back a bunch of blackberry and I have a big pile of clippings. I’m building tall (3ft-4ft) raised garden beds and was hoping to fill the bottom will decomposing wood (Like hugekultur) and potentially the cut up black berry. I worry that it will reroot and I’ll end up growing blackberry in the beds instead of veggies... is it a bad idea?

Thank you for your question. Blackberries do root from the canes, so you are wise to avoid putting them anywhere you don’t want them. You don’t say what cultivar you have; some root more than others. Here is an article about them, including propagation: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/ec1303.pdf Hope this is helpful!
