Good for mulch or not?

Asked March 17, 2020, 2:00 PM EDT

We recently had our beautiful old elm taken down due to Dutch Elm's disease. 9 months later the city came by and ground up the stump. Would those wood chips/sawdust make good mulch for the garden? Or would it be toxic? Thank you for your response.

The wood chips make a good mulch. Until they become aged compost they tend to deplete nitrogen. That is easily fixed with a little fertilizer. The Elm bark was chipped into small enough pieces that it doesn’t carry Dutch elm disease anymore.
