Maple trees losing bark

I have numerous Maple trees (sugar maples) where the tops of the tree have lost all of there bark

We can't be sure why the bark is missing without seeing the branches or sharp photos. However, several people have reported similar problems. Squirrels removed the bark those cases. Porcupines remove bark too.
