Rabbit meat

Asked March 13, 2020, 11:39 AM EDT

I am interested in having a pet rabbit and selling the offspring for meat. What are the Michigan laws for selling live or meat rabbits not butchered? What about butchered? I live in the 48602 area code behind Covenant hospital Thank you, Blaine Trarop

You can sell live rabbits or sell the live rabbits and then custom process them if you do it for the owner of the live rabbit. This is considered custom exempt. If you want to sell processed rabbit meat, a Food Establishment License from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is needed. The process for that license and requirements are similar to MDARD licensed poultry processors.
