Flowering Crab Apple w/ Apple Scab

Asked March 11, 2020, 11:09 AM EDT

Have mature tree that leaves out in spring. All OK. Early to mid-summer leaves start to turn yellow w/ few spots. By late summer, leaves dropping off. Due to size of tree & extent of problem, want to cut tree down. Question: Currently late winter-early spring in Mich. Can cut branches be chipped and used for general garden mulch or is there danger of spreading fungus to other plants ? if so, what is best way to get rind of branches/trunk etc. ?

This sounds like apple scab which does not overwinter in branches but in the leaves that drop to the ground. So there would not be a problem using the chips around other apples or crabapples that would be susceptible to apple scab fungus.
