Controlling moss in my lawn

Asked March 10, 2020, 6:55 PM EDT

I'd like to reduce the use of chemicals in my yard, and I think I can control most lawn weeds by manually digging them up, but moss has me stumped. Do you have recommendations for less-toxic ways of reducing moss in lawns?

The key to a weed-free lawn is to have grass out-competing the moss and weeds. This means watering, fertilizing, and mowing appropriately. It also means growing grass in enough sunlight. Reducing shade with tree pruning or removal might be a choice. Some homeowners choose to replace grass lawns in shady areas.
Here is an OSU publication, Managing Moss in Western Oregon Lawns. It gives specifics and has additional resources. If links to those don't work, search the title in Oregon Extension for the current version.
