Tiny black flies and even smaller specs on back of leaves of my plants

Asked March 9, 2020, 2:25 PM EDT

I have very small black things flying around my apartment and when I checked the backs of the leaves on my orchid and other plants i saw these tiny black specks that I could brush off. I have put them all out on my balcony in the cold but I think I must throw everything away. I hope you can advise me. Sallie

The tiny black flies are probably fungus gnats. Go here to learn about them and how to control them.

The photo isn't sharp enough for us to identify the black specks on the leaf.

Fungus gnats are mostly a nuisance. They do very little damage and can be controlled, so insofar as the gnats are concerned, it isn't necessary to dispose of the plants or their containers.
