What's this?

Hi- I need your Grow It Eat It expertise. This pretty red plant is growing in my vegetable garden. It looks intentional--it's planted in rows--but it's not something I recognize as having planted. I'm wondering if a seed packet was mislabeled. I think I intended to plant lettuce where this is growing. Do you have any idea of what this might be? Is it a red leaf lettuce? It made it through the winter without any row cover and looks robust and healthy. Thanks! Susan

Hello Susan,

Our educated guess is that this is either a red-leaved lettuce or radicchio; either can overwinter in mild years. If you taste some and it is bitter, radicchio is likely; if you snap a leaf and the sap oozing out of the vein is milky, lettuce is likely.

Thank you!
