tree replacement needed

Asked March 6, 2020, 1:39 PM EST

I have to take down a diseased sugar maple that is towering over my house. Great shade but it concerns me during thunderstorms. Its central core is rotten even though new growth attempts to enfold the infected area. The site is full sun, 8 ft. elevation, grey clay subsoil, waterfront location on Kent Island. I want a deciduous tree for summer shade and winter view. Suggestions>

Consider Nyssa sylvatica, black gum; Liquidamber styraciflua, sweet gum; and liriodendron tulipifera, tulip poplar. Take a look at the native plant resource guide for more selections https://www.fws.gov/Chesapeakebay/pdf/NativePlantsforWildlifeHabitatandConservationLandscaping.pdf
and the chesapeake bay native plant selector http://www.nativeplantcenter.net/
