The sex of inkberry hollies (Ilex glabra)

Asked March 6, 2020, 8:51 AM EST

Hello--I'm trying to purchase a male and a female inkberry holly (Ilex glabra) so that the female will produce berries for the birds, and I understand that most (all?) of the named cultivars are either male or female...but I'm finding it very hard to get reliable info, or any information at all, about which cultivars are which sex. Does anyone there know if Gem Box, Shamrock, Compacta, Densa, Nordic/Chamzin, and Nigra are male or female? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

According to Dirr's Manual, Inkberry species listed below.

Compacta is female.
Densa is female with sparse fruit set.
Nigra is female.

Nordic/Chazim described as male. But Bailes reports female. So ambiguous.

Gem box not listed, and Shamrock were not sex identified, but no mention of berries either.

The Monrovia page is selling Shamrock listing one attribute as berries.

Several other commercial sites lists Gembox has attracting birds, but doesn't specifically state it has berries.
