Grapes Pruined to old branches: Will the grapes revive?

Asked March 1, 2020, 10:27 AM EST

We grow a grape vine for patio shade. My husband pruined our overgrown grapevine to only its large branches draped over the pergola, no canes are left. Will it grow again? We are not interested in fruit, just shade.

Thank you for your question. Without a photo of the remaining grapevine structure, it is difficult to tell whether he left enough for the plant to resume growth on the spurs to produce foliage and then grapes. Perhaps the information in the following Extension article, and the one to which it links, will give you an idea: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/dont-be-timid-when-pruning-grapes Good luck!
