Cinder block raised bed

Asked February 28, 2020, 4:30 PM EST

I am looking to start a garden and am looking for inexpensive material to make raised beds. I’m seeing conflicting information online about the safety of concrete or cinder blocks for vegetables. Is this a real concern? If I should avoid it, are there other inexpensive materials you might recommend?

The most important part of your new beds is the soil. I strongly recommend going to a local nursery and asking for a garden blend—definitely not topsoil. Concrete blocks can leach a small amount of lime into the soil but not every type will. If you are concerned about it line your walls with a heavy plastic. If you also line the bottom be sure to make adequate drainage holes. Plants will not flourish in soil that is continually waterlogged.
