xeric vines

Asked February 27, 2020, 4:19 PM EST

I am relandscaping my yard this summer and want to plant a hardy, xeric vine to grow over a pergola I'll be building. Do you have suggestions for one or more that do well in a sunny location, offers bird/bee benefits, and is resistant to Japanese beetles?

Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, we recommend staying away from grapes, Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), and Silver Lace Vine (Polygonum aubertii) because they attract Japanese Beetles.

We can't guarantee these won't get any JB, but we've had good luck with these: Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans), Kintzley's Ghost Honeysuckle (Lonicera reticulata 'Kintzley's Ghost'), or Sweet Autumn Clematis (C. terniflora).
