Asked February 22, 2020, 11:56 AM EST

I v had this plant about 10 years. Outside in warm weather, inside in same spot in winter. I water it about every 10 days. This year the plant looks healthy but one section of leaves continue to fall off. I ve checked for bugs or mites and find none. Its onlt on one stem. The leaves do not turn yellow or brown just drop off..

Hello. The leaf drop might be due to insufficient watering or over-watering. Make sure that you're watering the root ball thoroughly each time rather than just watering the top portion of the soil. Water the whole root area completely until water drains out the bottom drainage holes. Let the top several inches of the soil dry out between waterings. Press your finger down into the soil to check for dryness/dampness and water when the soil feels dry to the touch.

Leaf drop may also occur if the plant is near cold drafts or if the air is low in humidity (which is typically the case indoors in the winter). Consider placing a small humidifier nearby.

Scheffleras like an area that receives bright light without direct sunlight. The ideal room temperature should be about 65-75 degrees. Make sure your plant is not located near heating or A/C vents (again, causing low humidity).

You can begin to fertilize houseplants now. Apply a standard liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the active growth period. Repot if you see surface roots or roots coming from the holes in the bottom of the container. When repotting use a soilless potting mix and make sure the container is only one size larger than the last container. If the container is too large, the potting mixture can hold too much moisture and cause root rots.
