Crooked neck

Asked February 18, 2020, 9:37 PM EST

Hello. I have a 20 year old California King Snake. In the last 2 months, about 1" from her head, her neck has kind of twisted one direction and the opposite direction about an inch further down her body. Typically, she eats 3 or 4 mice once a month. Her appetite seems to have decreased. ( I think she's having trouble swallowing the mice. I can take a picture, if you'd like.

Thank you for your question. Kinks in the body are usually seen in hatchlings, and can be related to spinal development. I'm not familiar with them developing later in a snake's life. Nevertheless, it's most likely something you can't correct on your own. Since it seems to be affecting your snake's ability to swallow, you should take your snake to a reptile vet to have it examined to see if anything can be done.

I hope this information helps, and thank you for contacting Ask an Expert.
