ash tree disease

Asked February 1, 2020, 6:36 PM EST

How can we save our trees from the ash tree disease? they are just beginning to show signs. our neighbors have trees where the bark is completely off and I think they will cut them down.

these trees have been on the property for 100 years planted by our ancestors and we'd like to save them if possible.

thank you.

Hello,

This is not a disease of they ash. It is woodpecker damage from the birds removing the bark to reach the insect feeding on the layer below the bark. The insect is called the Emerald Ash Borer. Once you see that much damage on the tree, it is most likely going to die. See the fact sheet on the insect at the link from New York State. https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7253.html
