Raised beds soil composition

Asked January 23, 2020, 4:59 PM EST

We are building beds 24 inches and 33 inches high for seniors to garden in. What proportions of garden soil and compost should we use? to what depth? Could we use cardboard to fill the bottom of the 33 inch beds? All are 4 x 8 feet.

Thank you for your question. WSU has some great publications, both for the soil 'ingredients' that you asked about, but also for senior gardening ideas. Here is the one for seniors: https://www.hort.vt.edu/HUMAN/pub426020d.html

Here is the one for soil, specifically: https://extension.wsu.edu/clark/2016/03/raised-bed-gardening-good-choice-with-northwest-soils/

Hope these are helpful. Good luck!
