Maple tree trunk damage

Asked January 14, 2020, 5:32 PM EST

My maple tree about 25 years old or more is being chipped or ate at the bottom next to the ground. Looks like it might be rotten. The inside is moist. Is there anything I can do. Hate to cut it down.

It is not uncommon for a tree of this age to have internal decay. This doesn’t necessarily have to result in a take down situation. A hollow tree is still fairly sturdy structurally and can remain standing for a long time. The decision to take it down should be made from several criteria. Including but not limited to the objects in the landing zone of a potential fall. For more conversation on this call 5023489204
