Dangerous lichen?

Asked January 11, 2020, 7:07 PM EST

Found this white lichen like fungi growing around and on the base of our Western Red Cedars. Is it a concern? How can I kill it?

This is a fungal growth referred to as a crust. There are many species of crust fungi and they require use of a microscope to identify them. To get rid of a crust fungus you need to consult with a garden store to find an appropriate fungicide.

Before heading to the garden center, consider contacting the National Pesticide Information Center for suggestions on dealing with this type of fungi. Unlike a garden center, they don't have a dog in the fight so to speak, and can advise you on options that reduce risk to people, pets and the environment.
