Potato “Seed” Certification

Asked January 6, 2020, 5:09 PM EST

I fellow farmer wants to sell his small batches of potatoes for seed to the public in the next few weeks. I always assumed you have to have certain certifications (or something) in order to do that... am I incorrect and, is he okay to do this without any licensing or certifications?

To have certified seed, your friend would need to work though the Michigan potato seed certification process. So you can't sell it as certified and if you have more then an acre planted you should be cautious selling it as seed. There is a law that is going into effect in the near future that would make it illegal to grow more then an acre with of uncertified potatoes for sale.
