Mites are opportunistic feeders, so they will hop onto people if their preferred host is not available. Bird, rodent, sarcoptic, dust and other mites are all pests with known "neighborhoods" that people run across. I have had the northern fowl mite on me as well. I think (my interpretation) that we tend to go to sources where the pest is most found, rather than all other species it can land on.
Should you find mites on yourself it would be good to get these identified and so you will know where to look for others to help in their control.
