Silver Maple Tree Root Removal

Asked December 27, 2019, 9:47 AM EST

We are in the process of cutting down a huge silver maple tree because the roots are growing under and lifting the HVAC unit and the pole barn floor. How can we remove the roots from under the concrete floor. If we cut the roots outside the barn will the roots under the barn rot away?

Cutting the roots outside of the barn will help the process of decay. It will be slow as oxygen levels below the concrete are low for the fungal growth that will feed off the dead roots. You may get some sprouts that try to grow back at the stump and possibly at the cut point near the barn. This is the plant using the stored energy in the roots to try and survive. Keep cutting these frequently and it will use up the stored energy.
