Chicken feet and heat

Asked December 2, 2019, 9:11 PM EST

Do chicken feet play a role in thermal regulation of chickens? Would chickens benefit from wading pools in hot summer? Does anyone know if they use them if provided?

Chickens regulate heat via their respiratory system. As their body temperature rises they breath faster to deal with heat stress. As they transfer heat they also lose moisture and will drink more. For the health of the bird it is better to keep their feet as dry as possible.
