swarms question

Asked November 26, 2019, 9:33 AM EST

At sunset (and around lights when it's dark) there are huge swarms of winged insects lately in Louisville. Hoping they're not termites; worried they might be.

Thank you for your question. Since there are 10,000 species of insects in Kentucky, many of which swarm before winter, either to mate or to find shelter over the winter, it is necessary to have a photo of one or more insects, close up enough for identification. Here is an Extension publication with just a few possibilities: https://www.uky.edu/Ag/CritterFiles/casefile/insects/insectfile.htm

Once you have captured one, if you are still unable to identify it, I suggest you contact your county Extension office for help: https://jefferson.ca.uky.edu/

Good luck!
