Weed-free straw?

Asked November 20, 2019, 9:20 AM EST

Is there any such thing as weed-free straw that we can use to cover an area in which we will be spreading wildflower seeds? If so, where can I find it in or near Howard County? We need to cover the area now (November 2019) because it is recently regraded and we need to protect it from erosion until we can establish vegetation.

Straw with weed seeds can be frustrating, but there are no guarantees. Inspect the bale before you buy for obvious weeds mixed in. Go somewhere reputable. We don't have a list of sources.

Straw often has the seeds of the grain plant which was harvested from the type of straw it is, such as oats. If these seeds germinate, usually they can easily be pulled or mowed before they produce seeds.
