How should I address underground nest ? Much to my surprise, this summer, was stung many times after stepping on entrance hole. Will they over-winter underground ? Thanks

Yellow jackets all die when we get hard freezes, except for the young queen who leaves and overwinters in a sheltered area. She does not return to the nest. Probably a way to maintain healthy sanitation.

At any rate, you don't need to do anything. The dead yellow jackets will decompose and feed the earth.

Yellow jackets are beneficial predators of pest insects most of the time, but they will protect their nest. Ouch.
