Paper barked birch problem

Asked November 11, 2019, 3:12 PM EST

Hello...I have three paper barked birch trees with bore holes in several locations on the trunks. The trees appear to be healthy other than one smaller branch that had some early die back. I read about a beetle that is prevalent around here but these don’t appear to tunnel like the damage of those that I saw. I haven’t noticed any woodpeckers so don’t think that’s the issue. Your thoughts and treatment options?

Thank you for your question. I suspect the insects your tres are infested with are the bronze birch borer, described here: https://pnwhandbooks.org/insect/hort/landscape/hosts-pests-landscape-plants/birch-betula-bronze-birch-borer Treatments are listed here: https://pnwhandbooks.org/sites/pnwhandbooks/files/insect/horticultural-landscape-ornamental/content/pdf/pdfs/landscape-chem-control.pdf However, before administering chemicals, I suggest you consult with your county Extension: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/yamhill Good luck!

Thank you for the information. Will Yamhill County see this thread? Or do I need to post directly to them?

Yamhill Extension has the same Handbook resource as do I, or they can look up this Ask an Expert thread (#606145). I know of no way to post it to them, unless you want to cut and paste it into a word processing app and take it with you.
