Plant smells like orange

Asked November 11, 2019, 9:24 AM EST

There's a plant that grows all over my land that at this time of year, when it's dead and dried, has an orange-ish scent to it when the dry leaves and stalk are crushed. What is it, please?

Hello - This looks like it might be beefsteak plant (Perilla frutescens). Does the stem look and feel square rather than round? Do you recall what the flowers and foliage looked like? Compare it to the photos at the following link, https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=3735

Perilla frutescens
has become invasive in many areas of Maryland. If Perilla is not a match, we will have to see photos of the flowers next season.
