Storm water garden

Asked November 6, 2019, 1:48 PM EST

I recently moved to a home where there is a stormwater drain that empties on to the yard and then flows to the next-door church property. There is also an open drain that runs around the house to lead rainwater away from the property.
I would like ideas for a stormwater garden that I can get ready before it gets too cold and maybe start planting next spring.
Thank you

Good morning. Since you are located in Montgomery County, I encourage you to read about the Montgomery County RainScapes Program. This program is designed to deal with just the type of situation you have -- managing stormwater on a residential property. Rebates are offered to Montgomery County residents to support the implementation of approved projects such as rain gardens, rain barrels, and/or conservation landscaping. You can find the information at the following link and contact your Department of Environmental Protection for assistance. https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/water/rainscapes/index.html

If you decide to make a rain garden or a conservation landscape, we do have resources to assist with plant selection, etc., and would be happy to answer any further questions you have as you proceed with your plans. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/stormwater-water-rain-gardens
