As I collect food scraps in my kitchen, I'd like to alternate veggies with paper egg carton strips or torn newspaper. It would seem that that would help to make sure I have enough carbon for the ratio C:N. I'll add shredded leaves when I tale it to my compost pile. Also, that would also absorb some of the excess moisture. What do you think? Thanks for your reply.

Hi- that's a good approach as long as you have room in your collection container. The high carbon materials will absorb odors and moisture. The carbon from newspaper and egg cartons is negligible compared with the carbon in the leaves in your outdoor pile.
