How do you stop Woodpeckers from pecking holes in your house

Oakland County Michigan

This question is somewhat dependent on the cause of why the woodpecker is knocking on your house. If it is making small irregular holes it could be you have an infestation of some form of bug in your siding. If it's making a loud noise with little to no holes created it could be making a matting call.

The remedies that are out there very from illegal or ineffective to successful when you know the cause. Just note that the North American Migratory Bird Treaty protects all MI Woodpecker species and their eggs and nest from take (meaning you can't kill, capture or otherwise harm them without a permit).
