Ivy on my trees
Asked November 2, 2019, 9:36 AM EDT
Despite periodic attempts, ivy has continued to overtake our forest and is now in all the big oaks around our property. Is there a safe way to get rid of it?? We do not use herbicides.
Benton County Oregon
The method used to try to control ivy in Portland's Forest Park is to cut the ivy at the base of the tree (leave the vines on the tree or pull off if you want), cut/pull/dig about three feet away from the base (and probably do it again next year) and pile the vines in circular mounds, where they will eventually rot. This was an OSU Alumni Association Day of Service project a few years ago - and groups go out every year to clear more acres of ivy.
Attached is a detailed explanation of the method with links for more information.
