Fungus in spruce

Asked November 2, 2019, 9:32 AM EDT

Noticed this whiteish substance on my mature spruce late summer. Now inner areas of tree appear to be dying out. Never any issues for the past 17 years.

I can't tell exactly what may be going on with your spruce from your photos. It could be sap or maybe symptoms of Admes mite damage. I would suggest you send a foliage sample to MSU’s Diagnostic Services to see if they can determine a cause. You will want to go to their website to see how to send a sample, www.pestid.msu.edu
Here is a link to information on Admes mite. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/spider_mites_and_admes_mites_are_active_in_conifers
