Bark damage on Azara

Asked November 1, 2019, 2:32 PM EDT

My friends are baffled about the source of damage on their 5 years in ground Azara.
They can't think of any mechanical damage source nor have they witnessed any creatures eating or pecking it. Is there a pathogenic cause for something like this? If so, what treatment is recommended?

Hi: I have grown an Azara in our garden west of Monmouth for many years and it's suffered damage from freezing rain occasionally. It's always grown back with gusto. This looks like physical damage from a while ago as there is callus tissue all around the wound. I have no idea of the cause, but this happened a while ago. I would not suggest any action at all, the plant is busily healing itself.
