White Fungus (shelf?) on trunk of our japanese maple,

Asked October 28, 2019, 4:13 PM EDT

We have a White (shelf?) type Fungus growing upward on the lower trunk of our mature Japanese maple. See attached photo below. There is also some bark splitting/peeling on the lower trunk just above the ground level. How do we specifically treat it, and how do we save the tree or remainder of the tree?
Thanks, Chuck

This is one of the rot fungi, possibly Schizopyllum, Cerrena or Polyporus. I am not a plant pathologist so I am not 100% sure. These fungi enter through wounds or take advantage of trees that are under stress. There is no treatment other than trying to alleviate the other stress (if that is known).

Thanks Tim, much appreciated.
