Elephant Ear Trunk

Any suggestions welcome.
I bought this plant from an online group. Just recently have gotten into plants. I am wondering what in the world to do with this guy. Currently, it wont fit in a pot. The stem itself is at least 4 foot long and 7-8 inches in diameter. I would like to cut the stem down so that I can plant it in a pot.

Let it die down naturally so that some of the energy in the leaves can be transferred to the tubers. Once the top part of the plant is brown, cut the top part off and pot up the tubers in a large pot and store in a cool basement or garage that will stay 15 to 20 degrees above freezing. You can start watering them in the pot in April and transplant outside if you wish when the soil temp reaches 70 to 80 degrees; usually about June.
