Cabbage caterpillars and moths

Asked October 17, 2019, 8:40 AM EDT

The end of the season was pretty bad for my kale this year. The larvae won’t overwinter, right? I’ve read some organic remedies and covering techniques that I will try next season but can you suggest anything else? Thank you!

Hello,

Thank you for your question. Some types of pupae can overwinter. I think the following 2011 MSU Extension bulletin on "Caterpillar Pests in Cole Crops" could be helpful for you: http://vegetable.ent.msu.edu/wp-content/uploads/Cole-Caterpillars-E3165-1.pdf

Here is another article on the topic from MSU Extension: "Identifying and managing caterpillar pests of the cabbage family" https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/identifying_and_managing_caterpillar_pests_of_the_cabbage_family

Please let me know if you have further questions after reviewing these resources.
