There are many animals, snakes, insects that dig into and damage lawns for various reasons, but the most common are raccoons and skunks, digging for food, grubs, earthworms, or whatever. Because your holes are shallow with no tunneling means the culprits were digging for food, again most likely raccoons or skunks. They are often messier then the reasonably neat holes you are seeing but they remain the top suspects. It can happen fast and always after dark some time during the night because both are nocturnal. Good luck!
