Watering Blue Spruce

Asked October 13, 2019, 12:07 PM EDT

We planted in our yard two 8 ft blue spruces in late June. Watered once a week during summer to saturation. How much should I water during the winter months? Thank you

Thank you for sending your question to Ask an Expert.

You should water your spruce and all trees and shrubs at least once a month when the ground is not frozen, has no snow on it, and temperatures get to 40 degrees. You will want to water by mid-day so the water has a chance to soak into the root zone.

You can also help protect your evergreens with a anti-desiccant or anti-transpirant sprays that will help provide protection from wind and sun and slow the evaporation of moisture from the needles.

Enjoy your new trees!
